The Timeline
Days 1–7: Nothing visible (normal)
Seed is absorbing water underground. Keep the seedbed consistently moist — this is the most critical week. A dry day can kill germinating seed.
Days 7–21: Germination
Tall fescue typically sprouts in 7–14 days in warm fall soil, with stragglers out to three weeks. You'll see a green haze that thickens daily. Keep watering; tiny seedlings are fragile.

Weeks 3–6: Fill-in
Seedlings tiller — each plant sends up multiple blades — and bare areas visibly close. First mowing usually happens around week 4–5, when grass hits 3.5–4 inches; cut to 3 inches and never remove more than a third of the blade.
Months 2–6: Establishment
Through late fall, winter dormancy of top growth (roots keep developing), and spring, the lawn thickens steadily. By the following May, a properly done fall renovation looks like an established lawn.
The first summer: the real test
Fall-planted fescue faces its first summer with 8+ months of root development — that's the whole point of fall timing. Water deeply and infrequently through heat, mow high (3.5–4 inches), and expect some stress in extreme heat. It recovers in fall.
