Every July, the calls start: brown patches spreading across fescue lawns that looked great in May. Tall fescue is a cool-season grass living at the southern edge of its comfort zone — Middle Tennessee summers test it. Here's what's actually happening and what to do.
Cause 1: Brown Patch Disease
The #1 summer killer of fescue in Nashville. Brown patch is a fungus that thrives in hot, humid nights (exactly our July–August). Look for circular brown patches, sometimes with a darker "smoke ring" edge, often starting in low or poorly drained areas. It doesn't usually kill the crown — the grass often recovers in fall — but severe cases need fungicide, and repeat yearly infections weaken the lawn permanently.
Prevention: water early morning only (never evening), avoid excess nitrogen in summer, mow high (3.5–4 inches) for airflow, and improve drainage in chronically wet spots.

Cause 2: Heat and Drought Stress
Fescue slows dramatically above 90°F and can go semi-dormant in extreme heat — browning from the top down, starting in the sunniest, most compacted areas. Deep watering (1–1.5 inches per week, early morning) keeps crowns alive through it. Shallow daily sprinkling makes it worse by encouraging shallow roots.
Cause 3: Grubs and Insects
If brown patches peel back like carpet — roots eaten away — suspect grubs. Summer is grub season in Middle Tennessee. A professional can confirm with a quick soil check; curative treatments exist but timing matters.
Cause 4: Compacted Clay + Poor Drainage
Clay that bakes hard in summer sheds water instead of absorbing it; low spots that stay soggy breed disease. Both trace back to soil — which is why core aeration every fall or two is the best long-term defense.
When It's Beyond Saving This Season
If summer took out large sections, don't fight it in August — plan the comeback. Late summer is the time to schedule a fall renovation: aeration, overseeding, and soil work when conditions favor fescue again. Fall is prime renovation season for exactly this reason.
