When a Full Kill Is the Right Call
- The lawn is more than about a third weeds — crabgrass, dallisgrass, nutsedge, chickweed mats
- The existing grass is the wrong type for the site (e.g., a failing warm-season grass in a cool-season lawn)
- There are large dead zones from grubs, disease, or construction damage
- You want a uniform lawn, not a patchwork of old and new grass
In these cases, overseeding over the mess wastes seed — the weeds outcompete it. A clean start wins.

- The lawn is thin but still mostly desirable fescue
