A bumpy lawn scalps under the mower, trips ankles, and makes even healthy grass look neglected. The fix depends on why it's bumpy — and the cause determines whether it's a weekend project or professional work.

Why Lawns Get Bumpy

Construction settling. New-build lots settle unevenly for years as backfilled soil compacts — the most common cause in West Nashville infill.
Old stump and root decay. Removed trees leave voids that collapse over time.
Worm casts and critters. Moles, voles, and even heavy earthworm activity create surface irregularity.
Poor original grading. Some lawns were never smooth to begin with.
Thatch and turf bounce. Spongy thatch makes mowing uneven even when the soil is fine.

DIY: Topdressing Small Imperfections

For minor unevenness on an otherwise healthy lawn: mow low, apply a thin layer (¼–½ inch) of leveling mix — typically a sand/topsoil/compost blend — work it in with a rake or leveling drag, and water. Repeat in subsequent seasons; leveling is gradual. Best done in early fall when you can overseed into it.
